Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala Closer to Getting WTO DG Job

The European Union governments has thrown its support behind Nigeria’s candidate, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the position of the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

In the same vein, the EU also expressed support for Korea’s, Yoo Myung-hee. EU member-country envoys agreed on Monday in Brussels to endorse Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Yoo, South Korea’s trade chief, in their bids to become WTO Director-General.

Okonjo-Iweala and Myung-hee are part of the five contenders in the final round for the job position. Others are Amina Mohamed of Kenya, Mohammad Maziad Al-Tuwaijri of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Liam Fox of the United Kingdom.

The five candidates emerged in September from eight others after due consultations by the WTO. Okonjo-Iweala was a Minister of Finance in Nigeria. She also held a position as the Managing Director of the World Bank.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari had earlier nominated Okonjo-Iweala for the WTO DG role with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) later backing her nomination. 

Above all,  experts familiar with the voting preferences of WTO’s Governing Council had argued that Dr Okonjo-Iweala’s high professional/personal qualities, international contacts and impeccable records as Nigeria’s former Finance minister/Foreign Affairs minister and as former managing director of the World Bank, stand her high above other contestants. She remains a candidate to beat for the topnotch job because of her reformists record in many countries and international organizations like WTO.

Latest Development 

The chances of Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala is getting brighter in the next stage with just two contenders left. The two were selected from a list of five candidates with three eliminations.

The three eliminated during the second round of “confessionals” – in which all member states confidentially voice their preferences – were Liam Fox of Britain, Mohammed Al-Tuwaijri of Saudi Arabia, and Amina Mohamed of Kenya.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state has appointed winner of Big Brother Naija 2020, Olamilekan ”Laycon” Agbeleshe as a youth ambassador.

He also announced a gift of three bedroom bungalow and N5million for the 26-year-old rapper.
The governor made the announcement in Abeokuta, on Tuesday, when he played host to the reality TV star at the executive chamber of the governor office.
“Once again, I congratulate you and on this note, I hereby appoint you as Youth Ambassador of Ogun State. I look forward to working with you to be a model of good character, excellence, good virtues, calmness, integrity that are general attributes of Ogun State, and in fact, your homestead, Odeda.

“We believe that you will help inspire our teeming youths to channel their energies towards positive engagements and shun vices such as robbery, drug abuse, cultism, advanced fee fraud, cybercrimes and kidnapping amongst other negative tendencies,” the governor announced.

While congratulating Laycon, who is a native of Odeda local government area of the state, Abiodun revealed that an entertainment village is being contemplated to nurture budding talents in the state and beyond.
“On behalf of the Government and good people of Ogun State, I join your fans across the world to welcome you to your Home State.
“I also want to congratulate you on your success after 71 days as a housemate at the Year 2020 Big Brother Naija, Lockdown Edition.”

The governor said young Nigerians can learn from Laycon’s demeanor while in the BBNaija house based on how he related well with the other 19 housemates from different backgrounds.

Governor Abiodun also praised Laycon who he said, “demonstrated the Omoluabi component which is the primary ingredient of an Ogun State-born Nigerian. Despite all the odds, temptations, and provocations in the House, I am proud that you came out unscathed and uninvolved in any scandal or immoral act.
“You have also demonstrated with the way you carried out your assigned tasks in the House with comportment; intellectual responses to questions and; your spirit of fair-play, that your academic achievement at the University of Lagos was earned. This has also shown that our Universities can and still produce graduates that are found worthy in character and good learning.”
He added that the celebration of Laycon’s personality is beyond the entertainment that the House provided, but “what you represent: a rare combination of prodigious intellect, academic excellence, multi-faceted talents, character, and resilience.”

Police IG Adamu Mohammed bans Killer Squad - SARS and Tactical Squad from Nigerian roads

Nigerians are calling on the President to intervene in high handedness and unnecessary killing of upcoming Nigerians by Federal Special Anti-Robery Squad (FSARS) especially in the Eastern and Western parts of the country.  The FSARS activities has gone tyrannical and heartless. Their activities has led to many unpalatable experiences by many citizens including parents that have loss their children to gruesome killings by the FSARS, maiming and unimaginable extortions. 

It's against this backdrop that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu NPM mni has banned the personnel of the FSARS and other Tactical Squads of the Force including the Special Tactical Squad (STS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Anti-Cultism Squad and other Tactical Squads operating at the Federal, Zonal and Command levels, from carrying out routine patrols and other conventional low-risk duties like – stop and search duties, checkpoints, mounting of roadblocks, traffic checks, etc – with immediate effect because of many unprofessional and unpatriotic allegations by Nigerians especially on Social Media like Twitter with #EndSARS, #ENDSARSNOW hashtags and Instagram messages .

Additionally, the IGP warned that no personnel of the Force is authorized to embark on patrols or tactical assignments in mufti like they usually do. It was one of the reasons that led to lost of lives of some police officers during a shoot out between Nigerian Army and some policemen in mufti in Taraba sometime last year. The IGP starnly warned that they must always appear in either their police uniforms or approved tactical gear to avoid being sanctioned. The IGP’s directives come against the backdrop of outcry from Nigerians and findings by the leadership of the Force that a few personnel of the Tactical Squads hide under these guise to perpetrate all forms of illegality, contrary to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement establishing the squads.

Unequivocally, the IGP has warned the Tactical Squads against the invasion of the privacy of citizens particularly through indiscriminate and unauthorized search of mobile phones, laptops and other smart devices with their attendants extortion of huge amounts of money from Nigerians. He specifically warned that they are to concentrate and respond only to cases of armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes when the need arises.

The IGP noted that the FSARS and other Police Tactical Squads remain a critical component of the Force in confronting prevailing and emerging violent crimes in the country. He however condemns every act of unprofessionalism, abuse of human rights, extortion and high-handedness by some unscrupulous personnel of the Squads. He has therefore ordered the X-Squad and the Monitoring Unit to embark on immediate and massive nationwide monitoring of activities of Tactical Squads and other police officers on the road. They are to ensure immediate arrest, investigation and prosecution of all erring police officers who violate these directives and other extant regulations of the Force.

Equally, the IGP has warned, that henceforth, the Commissioner of Police in charge of FSARS, Commissioners of Police in charge of State Commands and the FCT as well as their supervisory Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police, will be held liable for any misconduct within their Area of Responsibility. He therefore charged them to ensure effective supervision and mentoring of the personnel of the Tactical Squads under their jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, two operatives of the FSARS and their civilian accomplice operating in Lagos State, Inspectors Sale James  and Monday Uchiola with Mr Okechukwu Ogbonna, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, for acts of professional misconduct including extortion and intimidation of innocent citizens. The operational vehicle of the men has also been impounded and disciplinary process has already commenced against the defaulters.

The IGP reaffirms his commitment to bequeathing to Nigerians, a reformed Police Force that is accountable, responsible and ever ready to defend and uphold the rights of the citizens while discharging its duties of keeping the people safe and secure. He enjoins the citizens not to allow the misconduct of a few unscrupulous personnel of the Force to negatively impact on their belief, confidence and trust in the Police. This appeal and reassurance was made public by 
DCP Frank MBA, the Force PRO.

Apart from the ban, Presidency has equally reassured citizens with express permission to do these two things:

Nigerian Scientists Develop Cheaper and Faster Made in Nigeria COVID-19 Testing Kits

Scientists in Nigeria have developed a cheaper and faster Covid-19 test kit that will spur testing in a place that has faced kit shortages and chronic under-testing of a massive population, according to the country’s health authorities. The new test is cheaper than other PCR tests — the most common type of test — and can give results in less than 40 minutes, the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) said.

 The diagnostic test kit will cost less than $25 and samples can be analyzed using a mobile machine that can be operated by low-skilled personnel with minimal training, the agency said.  We saw the need for more testing outfits, especially one that can give results in a short time because hospitals were refusing to treat patients without Covid-19 results,”

 Babatunde Salako, the director of NIMR, told CNN.”The machine we use is not the common PCR one. We bought the machine and adapted the kit that we developed to work with this machine. It is meant for diagnosis of other pathogens,” Salako said.  Although Salako added that the detection rate of the NIMR test kit is “a bit lower than the PCR, but for the point of care, we believe it is good enough for now.” 

Nigeria currently imports PCR test kits from China and has faced challenges in getting enough kits to test most of its population of 200 million. “We thought this one was very important as it will diversify the way testing is done. With this one, all the people in villages and remote areas can be tested by moving the machine to those villages,”

Salako, who has headed the agency since 2016 said. So far, Nigeria has recorded more than 59,000 cases of Covid-19 and more than 1,000 deaths as of October 2, according to figures from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. Health authorities also report a declining number of cases, with treatment centers, known as isolation centers, being closed in the country. 

Nigeria as Africa’s largest population has tested only about 500,000 people, according to figures from local health authorities.  This development will boost the number of test to be carried out at a cheaper rate and easy to source test kits. The PCR test is the most widespread and accurate diagnostic test for determining whether someone is currently infected with coronavirus or not.

 However, the tests require specialized supplies, expensive instruments, and the expertise of trained lab technicians, which has led to shortages and a testing gap globally. This development will in no small way improve the problem of getting the sourcing for the PCR kits.

US VISA LOTTERY APPLICATION REOPENS

After many years of suspension, registration for the United States Diversity Visa Program, also known as Visa Lottery, DV-2022 will open electronically at  dvprogram.state.gov between noon, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) (GMT-4), Wednesday, October 7, 2020, and noon, Eastern Standard Time (EST) (GMT-5), Tuesday, November 10, 2020.

The Department of State annually administers the statutorily created Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) provides for a class of immigrants known as “diversity immigrants” from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. For Fiscal Year 2022, up to 55,000 Diversity Visas (DVs) will be available. There is no cost to register for the DV program.

Applicants who are selected in the program (selectees) must meet simple but strict eligibility requirements to qualify for a diversity visa. The Department of State determines selectees through a randomized computer drawing. The Department of State distributes diversity visas among six geographic regions, and no single country may receive more than seven percent of the available DVs in any one year.

Also, persons born in the following countries are not eligible to apply, because more than 50,000 natives of these countries immigrated to the United States in the previous five years:

Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (including Hong Kong SAR), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam. Persons born in Macau SAR and Taiwan are eligible.

There is no cost to submit an entry form.

Individuals who submit more than one entry during the registration period will be disqualified.

On Wednesday, April 22, 2020 President Trump signed a proclamation suspending entry into the United States of certain immigrants who present risk to the U.S. labor market during the economic recovery following the COVID-19 outbreak.

The proclamation was effective at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Thursday, April 23. It was continued by President Trump on June 22, and will expire on December 31, 2020, unless continued. Applicants for immigrant visas covered by the proclamation, including Diversity Visa 2020 (DV-2020) applicants, who have not been issued an immigrant visa as of April 23 are subject to the proclamation’s restrictions unless eligible for an exception.

No valid visas will be revoked under this proclamation.

Those who previously issued visa for the DV-2020 program was valid on April 23 and expired before being able to travel to the United States, can contact the Embassy or Consulate where the visa was issued for further information.
